Personality:
The ego has walked into the room. The first, and arguably most important thing to note about Nikola is his ego. Anyone else's ego? Doesn't even come close. Self-centred to the extreme, he loves himself first, above everything and everyone else, and has very little time for anyone who he deems as unimportant, or unworthy of his attention - which is pretty the entire human race. He sees a large portion of them as stupid. However, he can be charming, urbane, extremely knowledgeable about wines (his second love, after himself).
Curiosity can catch him out at times. He is a scientist through and through, and loves his work. He can’t stop inventing, and is probably the single most important inventor ever to have lived. He may be egotistical, but he is prepared to learn - and then tear apart, and make far better, all due to him.
He doesn’t have all the eccentricities that come with the historical Nikola Tesla - he’s most definitely not celibate, his OCD is somewhat tamped down, though he does dress impeccably. He’s a more savvy person, having lived for so long.
The most important person in his life after himself is Helen Magnus. He’s most definitely in love with her (or his version of love), and she is the only person who can possibly bring his ego down to normal levels. She reminds him that at the core, he is still part human, something that’s very easy to forget when he gets caught up in his plans. If she calls, he will drop everything to help, because it’s who she is - they are possibly the only two immortals in existence, and their lives will be entwined potentially forever. His wilder plans can be halted with her influence - or at least put right with her help. However, there are others he tolerates, but you have to really earn his respect to get anywhere with him - unless you have a pretty face, then his attention is turned very easily.
Part of the reason Nikola is how he is is that he is tired of watching humanity making the same mistakes again and again. When you get to the root of it, most of his inventions have been conceived as great gifts to humanity - free electricity, the ability to communicate long distance etc, but because of a blind spot he appears to have (he consistently fails to keep control of his inventions, from the 1890s onwards), he loses control, and someone twists them to something evil he never envisioned. Once he could understand, but the fact it happens time and time again had led him to begin to hate humanity. The evil they can do to each other - it makes him realise that the ancient vampire race was right. Humans need to be led.
Of course, Nikola may be an evil genius, but more often than not his ego gets in the way and trips him up. He’s a very fallible evil genius, but it doesn’t stop him constantly planning.
The fact that he has such a large debt won’t particularly bother Nikola, even if others find out. There is the element that yes, he has taken a lot of lives, but the most of them are in a ‘good cause’ - he went on a rampage during WW2, killing Nazi’s when they were targetting Serbs; he wiped out the remnants of his own race because at the end of the day, he couldn’t unleash that on the world (though it may have been in part because of his own ego - he likes being the only Vampire left); the Cabal hurt Helen, so he was willing to join in Druitt’s killing spree. He took a vow soon after he got his initial vampirism under control to not drink human blood, and as far as anyone can tell, he has completely held true to that over a hundred years.
Powers/Abilities: After being injected with the Source Blood along with the rest of the Five, Nikola turned into Sanguine Vampirus, or vampire. However, unlike most vampires, he never actually died to become one, just had dormant genes activated. He’s stronger than normal humans, has super speed, super anything you want that you normally associate with vampires, but none of the downsides (garlic just gives him bad breath, sunlight will give him a tan). At this point in canon, he also has electromagnetism, which means manipulating anything to do with that metal and electric conduits.
